Dr Sudarshan Paramsothy is an accomplished, internationally credentialed clinical academic Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist.
He graduated from the University of New South Wales with First Class Honours in 2005.
He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2012 after completing Gastroenterology & Hepatology specialty training, rotating through major tertiary institutions in Sydney, Australia (Concord Hospital, St George Hospital, Liverpool Hospital).
Dr Sudarshan Paramsothy then undertook a PhD (2013-6) through St Vincent’s Hospital and the University of New South Wales, investigating therapeutic microbial manipulation in ulcerative colitis. He was awarded an NHMRC Postgraduate Research Scholarship along with several national and international grants to perform this research. His PhD work has attracted widespread recognition with plenary presentations and awards at major international conferences and was ultimately published in the highly prestigious Lancet medical journal.
To further his subspecialty expertise, Dr Paramsothy then embarked on a two year overseas advanced Gastroenterology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) fellowship in the United States, at the University of Chicago Medicine (2016-17) and then at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York (2017-18). Both institutions are internationally recognized centres of excellence in Gastroenterology and IBD with global leaders in the field. His time at these institutions provided a unique opportunity to work in world class high-volume organisations, with unparalleled access to cutting-edge clinical practice and endoscopic techniques, novel therapeutic agents and research developments.
Upon his return to Australia, Dr Sudarshan Paramsothy remains active in both teaching and research. Given his recognised expertise and multiple publications, he is a regular invited peer reviewer of research for the premier international journals in the field of gastrointestinal diseases.
Dr Sudarshan Paramsothy is well versed in, and sees in his practice, all aspects of general gastroenterology and hepatology. His specific subspecialty interests include inflammatory bowel disease, high quality colorectal cancer surveillance and functional gastrointestinal disorders including irritable bowel syndrome.
Dr Sudarshan Paramsothy is currently affiliated with Strathfield Private Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital, and has private rooms in Burwood and Macquarie. He performs gastroscopy and colonoscopy (including haemorrhoidal banding) at Strathfield Private Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital with strict no-gap charges for all private procedures.
